About Sherpa Tenzing

At 11:30am on May 29th, 1953, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary became the first men to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

“The sherpas of the mighty Himalaya are amazingly strong and tough with an outstanding ability to perform effectively. Sherpa Tenzing and I both had substantial motivation and confidence and this drove us to our ultimate success on top of the world” said Sir Hillary in 2001.

In effect, no expedition reached the summit of Everest without the assistance of legendary sherpas.

Tenzing Norgay later became director of field training for the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling. In 1978, he founded a company, Tenzing Norgay Adventures, which offers trekking in the Himalayan Mountains. As of 2003, the company was run by his son Jamling Tenzing Norgay, who himself reached the summit of Everest in 1996. Tenzing died in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India in 1986.
